A year into the pandemic, we have learnt a few things about how Covid-19 spread in the Malaysian setting.

No two clusters are the same. Imagine 10 cases emerging from a single condominium building, and then imagine 10 cases popping up from a whole neighbourhood. These two situations deliver such different gravity.

We have heard of the principles: crowded area, high traffics, poor ventilation. However, such an ambiguous idea is hard to grasp when one can’t see it.

Still, thanks to your crowdsourcing; we can now present a map that is intuitive for you to use.

Selangkah’s AfMAP combines the best of Artificial Intelligent (AI) technology, Machine Learning, Geospatial Intelligence and analytic tools to track the risks of exposure to the affected clusters and predict the next forthcoming outbreaks in the communities.

Here’s what you need to know about the map:

  • The highlighted areas represent areas that have been identified to have a higher risk of Covid-19 transmission prospectively (specifically in the future). This is based on previous incidence, local population density and spread, mobility patterns, as well as other anonymous data.
  • The highlighted areas DO NOT indicate the current whereabouts of any specific case. Rather, it indicates a high-risk area, as described in (1).
  • The colour coding indicates the proportionality & likelihoods of emerging infection or clusters.
  • The risk-stratification of an area is dynamic and built using an Inherent Risk of Contagion Modelling. Learn more through our scientific publications at www.selangkah.my.

What you can do to decrease the risk:

  • A forecast can become a reality, but likewise, it can be acted upon. If you know it’s raining, bring an umbrella. Or in this case – wear a mask, practice hand hygiene, observe physical distancing, and avoid going out during peak hours.
  • If you live within a high-risk area and you or your loved ones develop any symptoms, do reach out to us to get screened. You can pick a convenient testing site through our Health function on the Selangkah App.
  • If you ‘pass through’ the area transiently, it is very unlikely that you will contract an infection. If you comply with the SOPs, there is hardly any reason for you to avoid the area.
  • Good hygiene practice and communal support and vigilance can decrease the area risk significantly! Advise each other, look out for residents who need help with PPEs, send supplies to or check on your neighbours who are undergoing home quarantine via text or phone call.
  • If you are a community leader, check on your members’ well-beings. Past data shows that increased vigilance and support structure among residents can significantly reduce a chance of a cluster forming.
